Blogging… Starter Tips Appreciated?

1. Best way to come up with a unique, appropriate, and available Domain name?
2. Best place to register said Domain name?
3. Where to host your blog at?
4. Adsense, or no Adsense? and what other advertising things are available?
5. Stat-tracker?
6. How/Should I allow people to register, or sign up through e-mail? or is there another option to try and keep readers coming back/enhance traffic?
7. How frequent should you post? I was thinking at least once a day, more frequently if time permits.
8. Plan on writing more in book form than blog form, pro’s/con’s/recommendation about that?

and any other tips I may have forgot to ask about…. Thanks.

and if you don’t feel like answering all questions, still appreciate any answers no matter how limited.
Thanks rachel.. am not familiar with the site you mentioned, but will definitely look into it.

well, I can’t answer all your questions, but…

try a non-sequitor for a unique domain name, like www.wacoistaco.com, something strange that will make people wonder about you

Once a day post would be ideal, posted at around the same time each day. People like regularity, and they like being able to read something new everyday. If you post less often, you won’t get as many people coming back.

I’d like to see a blog in book form…don’t make it like a diary, those kinds of blogs come off as self-important and boring. Share your interesting thoughts, not what you did today…

Good luck. Yahoo has some advertising thingie for a fee that’s supposed to increase traffic, but I couldn’t vouch for it personally

Can I modify wordpress for my use in a SaaS offering and charge people for Hosting?

I created a SaaS subscription service. I want to use WordPress as a base. If I am not actually distributing the code to people, but can I charge people for access to the site without disturbing the GPL agreement?

Webhosting an SVN (Subversion) server ?

I have GoDaddy “delux” Hosting, which is kind of their middle solution. I’d like to set up an SVN Server on my Domain somehow, and be able to access my repositories from anywhere. Eventually I’d like to use Tortoise SVN to “talk” to it.

Is that possible?
Looking at my GoDaddy features, since I’m using a Linux Server, I have SSH access.

Would they let me start a regular SVN server on my Domain?

Hello,

From my experience, you can not set up an SVN on an http server. There are certain services that need to be running to enable SVN features.

I personally use Unfundle, they are a free SVN host. Here’s a link: http://unfuddle.com/

Domain Names, and Web Servers?

I remember once i had a web server app that allowed me to create a Domain name w/o having to pay/register it. and it did work.

I am now thinking of setting up a mail and web server using a linux system. Now when i set up linux it asks me to create a domain name. now if i pick a name like www.myname.com will it host my site? I will be using Apache Web Server Project.

And if i do get it to work, are there laws about this? I know i can server a site using my IP address but i think i can make up a domain name also. like i said i did it once a long time ago, using a Macintosh.

Also if i do git it to work do i have to use the “www.” and the last part can it be more than 3 cariters?? for example:
<< "www.my_domaine.madman/", and can i replace the www??
ok, like i said i did get i to work a long time ago.and to top it off i had a dial up connection..

Why did it work then, and why wont it work again now, and i have a broad band connection

You can configure the machine to have whatever domain name you would like, but that most certainly does not allow other people to navigate to your server via that domain name. It is also absolutely not domain hijacking – it’s simply assigning a name to your server that only your server knows about.

The domain records which computers on the public Internet use to navigate to specific servers are managed by registrars (such as GoDaddy). Until you register a domain name through a registrar and point it to your server (by IP address) no-one will be able to find your website/email service.

For your last question, the final part of the domain name (called the top level domain, or TLD) may be more than three letters but you cannot choose an arbitrary one. The available TLDs are selected and regulated on an international level.

What’s the difference between Gopher servers and web server, is Gopher?

What’s the difference between Gopher servers and web server, is Gopher server faster or newer den web server

Gopher is an old Internet protocol that predates the HTTP protocol. It combines elements of FTP and hyper linking.

It’s not used anymore in typical Internet services since the web tools and services are much more robust and developed.
