How to Host A Website from home using Apache?
I’m really new to the home-Hosting website stuff. I have a laptop with windows vista home basic, and apache 2.2x server installed on it. I’ve downloaded my website from where i made it, and i don’t know how to Host It on my laptop! Does anyone know how, and could give me an easy-to-understand answer please? Thanks!
If you have Apache installed you are well on the way! There is no way to give a full tutorial here but here are some overview steps:
Is Apahe working? Start the server and point your browser to http://127.0.0.1. Do you see a server message telling you you have correctly installed Apache? Yes? Great. If not, you need to sort that out. Read the docs and use google to get your local server working.
Next, you need to make sure that your server can be reached. To do this you need to open a port on your router’s firewall (assuming you connect via a router) and have it forward that port onto your machine. You can get help with this from google and http://portforward.com/
Once this is done you can get your ip address (http://www.whatismyip.com/) and go to a different computer, put in the address and see you site…. but all those numbers… yuck… now go to dyndns.com and set up a Free Domain name to point to your server: http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndns/. Unlike a conventional Domain name that would require you to have a static ip address, this service, once you have set your router up to work with it – log into your route and look for “dynamic dns” – tracks your dynamic ip and keeps the name pointing at it.
Job done.
In truth you are going to need a few hours and google rather than yahoo answers. It is doable though and not too too hard! Good luck.
