Host Joomla

How do I host a Joomla site locally?

I host a Joomla site, but I need to update the Community Builder and Kunena software. I’d like to experiment with a locally Hosted version so that I don’t make any mistakes when I do it live. But I don’t know how to do it. What steps are there for Hosting it locally? I know I have to install Apache, but like what else? How do I make sure that the databases get downloaded? I’m tech savvy, but I kind of learn as I go. A website with the step by step directions would be greatly helpful.
I’d rather go the XAMP route since that’s how I first tested Joomla locally. Do I just download everything on my server from my FTP into the folder or do I have to copy some databases too?

That’s right, once you’ve downloaded the XAMP setup you can install it and copy all your Joomla files locally.

Step two is to do a search and replace across all the files using something like EditPlus to make sure your paths are not pointing to server locations and that your local files are pointing to local URL’s.

Final step, use phpMyAdmin to export your database from the live server and open it in Notepad, search and replace for anything specific to the server (addresses etc) and replace them with the localhost details.

When you’re done, edit your config file to point to the local MySQL server and it should all work perfectly.
