if i register a domain name with a hosting service is that in their name?
what i am trying to ask is if i buy a Hosting And Domain registration package if later i decide i want to change hosting services do i have control of that domain name or do they?
Most will register it in your name. But the best way is to register a domain name with a 3rd party, so if you decide to change hosting, your host can’t do anything to stop you, or to make it harder for you. And it’s really easy to do.
For example I host my sites with Dreamhost but register almost all the domain names with Namecheap http://www.namecheap.com (they have a new promo code every month, for the october it’s: indiansummer ($8.81))
It’s a good strategy even if you’re happy with your current host but want to move some of the higher traffic websites to a VPS or a dedicated server. The Free Domain(s) you get with your hosting plan, you can use for some less important websites, although they are all registered in your name so you can move them also, it’s just more of a hassle.
