What are dedicated servers in online games?
Are dedicated servers the ones we have in games like bad company 2 or MAG? What do you call the type of servers in the call of duty games?
A dedicated server in a game is pretty much saying an online community that belongs to an individual. For instance, the way the Call of Duty games work is they choose a host, someone to “own” the server, in which other people can constantly join and exit. This is a dedicated server. Advanced options allow them to switch who owns the server, too. The fact that it’s dedicated, means the server never ends. Dedicated servers can be either user or provider based.
Something that wouldn’t be considered a dedicated server would be, hoping you’ve played it, how the Gears of War 2 games used to be played. It would choose one person to be host, who could end the entire match simply by quitting, but the game would also be over at the end of the match. So, the game stops either with the host, or upon finishing one match.
